What’s Included in a Recording Session

Microphone

1. Engineering

I’ll set up and operate the equipment. You’re the artist, so why should you have to worry about any technical mumbo jumbo? I take care of all of that stuff, so you can feel more at ease and ready to kill your performance.

Speaker monitor

2. Producing

If you want to bounce ideas off me, I’m happy to help you shape the vision of your song. Sometimes an outside perspective can help refine something that hasn’t quite felt right to you all along.

Audio recording headphones

3. Equipment

You’ll have access to everything on my gear list. Outside of that, the only thing you need to bring is your favorite instrument and any recorded tracks you plan to play or sing along with.

Mixing console

4. Mixing

After all your tracks are recorded, I’ll balance and blend them using things like EQ, compression, and reverb. These are the final touches to make the recording sound like you’re a total pro.

Music treble clef

5. Final Files

The finished product will be delivered as MP3 files, WAV files, or on an old-school CD.

Do you need other musicians to cover parts?

If you need support, I have a network of seasoned studio session players that can be hired. You can have all your parts covered without ever needing to audition anyone on your own.

What to Expect on the Day of Recording

  • The room set-up is one of the most important parts to getting the right sounds. I’ll have initial things ready to go when you arrive.

However, the first part of your paid studio time will be devoted to other things that need your input, like getting the right mix in your headphones and determining how to mic things based on your goals.

We’ll also set up your session on the computer and transfer any files you bring to the session.

  • You can record in the main room or the isolation booth if you’re playing with other tracks. I’ll walk you through all the options, so you know how to pick what’s best for your situation.

  • For smaller projects, the mixing can be accomplished during your allotted session time, which gives you the opportunity to provide feedback on the spot.

However, mixing can also happen after you leave the studio, which you also have full input on. Timing just depends on how the session goes and how complex of a mix is needed.

  • Once you’ve paid in full for your project, your final files will be provided.

For example, a typical solo artist or voiceover talent will spend 2 – 3 hours in the studio, they settle the bill before they leave, so they have final files in hand at the end of the session.

Think of it this way… you’ll be able to listen to your completed track in your car on the way home!

Please note, for a more complex recording, like a full band, additional time will be needed before final files are ready; we’ll discuss that before you leave for the day.

Tips for Getting the Most From Your Recording Session

To get the best use of your studio time, here are things to plan for before you arrive at the studio:

  • Identify the end goal:
What do you plan to use the track for when it’s complete and how “perfect” does it need to be? For example, is it a demo or audition, or will the final product be sent to all the streaming services?

  • Schedule pre-planning for large projects:
For larger projects, like full bands who want to record multiple songs, scheduling a pre-production meeting is advised. That allows us to hammer out planning details in advance, so that each recording session is focused on the task at hand.

  • Be prepared:
Be well-rehearsed and know your parts as best as you can. If you’re making them up on the spot in the studio, that can be stressful and interfere with your performance. Plus, lack of preparation tends to require multiple takes to get things right, which costs more money.

  • Have an agenda for each session:
Have your songs prioritized, so you know the order in which you’d like to accomplish things. By discussing this at the beginning of your session, it sets appropriate expectations and helps me manage the session time accordingly.

  • Determine if you want mixing to happen on the session day:
Depending on the scope of the project, mixing can happen on the day of your session or it can be scheduled for another day. Sometimes, it’s easiest for me to mix on my own time with you giving input remotely.

  • Consider bringing an external hard drive or thumb drive:
Once you receive your final files via MP3/WAV/CD, I don’t assume any further responsibility for your tracks. If you’d like to have your tracks backed up, please bring an external hard drive or thumb drive with you to the session.

  • For most solo artists, it takes just 2 – 3 hours of time to knock out a song and most leave the studio with the completed track in hand. The time needed increases by complexity of project, like for a full band.

  • Yes! Listen to some of my portfolio page.

  • When it comes to music, I record it all: rock, pop, hip hop, R&B, country, classical, jazz, folk, etc.

For voiceover artists, I record projects related to things like commercials, audio books, and video games.

  • You’re probably wondering how to choose a studio that will be a good fit for your project.

For many, the choice comes down to relationships. People want to work with someone who has the technical skills, sure. But they also want someone who’s easy to work with, who will listen to them and offer advice when it’s wanted, and someone who makes the process enjoyable.

With Buzz Studios, you get technical expertise, along with a mentor who strives to make the experience rewarding and fun.

  • To reserve time on my calendar, it requires a $50 non-refundable deposit. Your deposit will be applied to your first session. Please be aware that if you cancel your booking before your scheduled date (or don’t show up), your deposit will be forfeited.
